About this species
Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum) needs outdoor light and seasonal conditions. A permanent position in a warm house is unsuitable. Keep the plant label so future care advice can be matched to its identity.
Position and light
Keep outdoors with plenty of light; shelter from fierce summer afternoon sun.
Watering
Check frequently during leafy growth and water when the surface starts drying. Rainwater is useful in hard-water areas.
Apply water gently until it drains from the base, then empty any drip tray. Use a fingertip, a wooden probe and the changing weight of the pot to learn its drying pattern. Check more often in wind or heat; avoid a fixed watering timetable.
Feeding
Use a balanced bonsai fertiliser at its label rate while the tree is growing healthily. Apply liquid feed to moist soil. Pause during stress and after root work until recovery is evident; reduce or stop as growth finishes. Do not combine full doses of several feeds.
Pruning and wiring
Let shoots extend, then shorten to one or two leaf pairs. Balance strong upper growth against weaker lower branches. Get advice before major cuts or defoliation; neither is routine care for a newly purchased tree.
Use clean tools. Inspect wired branches frequently and remove wire before it marks the bark. Spread demanding work over recovery periods rather than doing every job at once.
Soil and repotting
Assess the rootball in early spring as buds swell. Vigorous young trees may need repotting every two or three years; judge by drainage and root congestion. Use a draining mix that retains useful moisture.
Use a pot with clear drainage holes. After root work, water thoroughly and shelter from drying wind and intense sun while recovery begins. Do not repot solely because the tree has just arrived.
Winter care
Keep dormant and cool. Protect the container from prolonged freezing, using a cold frame or unheated shelter where needed. Do not bring into a heated living room.
Seasonal calendar
| Spring | Observe buds and vigour; assess planned work before starting. |
|---|---|
| Summer | Check moisture and protect against heat; inspect wire. |
| Autumn | Let growth mature and prepare winter shelter. |
| Winter | Keep cool; monitor root moisture and protect the container. |
Common problems
Scorched edges: check drying, wind and excessive sun. Inspect distorted shoots for aphids and spotted leaves for disease.
Photograph changes and inspect leaf or needle undersides, stems and drainage before treating. Isolate a pest-affected tree. Identify the cause before choosing a treatment labelled for that plant and problem; fertiliser does not cure unexplained decline.
Species-specific notes
This is a separate species from Japanese maple (Acer palmatum). Its characteristic leaves usually have three main lobes. Do not choose a guide by the word maple alone.
